How many dowels do I need per tier?

The number depends on the weight of the tiers above and the strength of your dowels. Most standard cakes need 3-5 dowels per tier. Heavier tiers or weaker materials require more dowels. This calculator accounts for a safety factor to ensure stability.

What material should I use for cake dowels?

Wooden dowels are the strongest and most traditional. Food-safe plastic dowels are lighter and easier to cut. Bubble tea straws work for lighter cakes and are the easiest to insert. Choose based on the weight of your cake and your personal preference.

How long should cake dowels be?

Cut your dowels to exactly the height of the tier they are supporting. Insert a dowel into the cake, mark it at the top of the icing, remove it, and cut all dowels to this length. They should sit flush with the top of the cake so the board above sits flat.

Do I need a cake board between each tier?

Yes, always place a thin cake card or board between each tier. This distributes the weight evenly across the dowels below and makes it much easier to separate the tiers for serving.

How We Calculate This

The calculator determines how many dowels each tier needs based on the total weight it must support (all tiers above it) divided by the maximum load per dowel, with a safety factor applied.

The Formula

Weight above tier = Sum of all tier weights above
Adjusted weight = Weight above x Safety factor
Dowels needed = Ceiling(Adjusted weight / Max load per dowel), minimum 3
Board size = Tier diameter + overhang (5cm base, 2.5cm intermediate)
