Milk Type Substitution Calculator

Calculate adjustments when substituting between whole, semi-skimmed, skimmed, and plant milks.

Compensate for fat difference with butter

Adds melted butter to match the original fat content

How We Calculate This

This calculator handles milk-for-milk substitution at a 1:1 ratio by volume, with an optional fat compensation calculation if you want to maintain the same total fat content in your recipe.

Milk Fat Content

  • Whole milk: 3.5% fat
  • Semi-skimmed: 1.7% fat
  • Skimmed: 0.1% fat
  • Oat milk: ~1.5% fat
  • Almond milk: ~1.1% fat
  • Soya milk: ~1.8% fat

Fat Compensation

If the substitute milk has less fat, you can add melted butter to make up the difference. The calculator works out how much butter (80% fat) is needed to match the original milk's fat contribution.
