How We Calculate This

This calculator works out how many biscuit shapes fit within your rolled dough dimensions, based on the cutter size and shape. It uses a simple grid layout to determine the first cut, then estimates additional biscuits from re-rolling the scraps.

The Formula

  • Grid fit (round): floor(length ÷ diameter) × floor(width ÷ diameter)
  • Grid fit (square): floor(length ÷ side) × floor(width ÷ side)
  • Re-roll bonus: the scrap is re-rolled and re-cut, so it suffers the same ~78.5% (pi/4) grid packing again, then a usability factor (~0.75) for irregular off-cuts and tougher re-worked dough — typically a one-off bonus of around 15-25%

Tips for Maximum Yield

  • Roll dough to a rectangle for the most efficient cutting
  • Use offset rows for round cutters to reduce waste
  • Chill scraps before re-rolling for cleaner cuts
  • Only re-roll once to avoid tough biscuits
