How We Verify Our Calculators
A baking calculator is only useful if the numbers behind it are right. A wrong grams-per-cup figure or an unsafe roasting time wastes ingredients at best and risks your dinner at worst. This page explains the process we use to check every figure on this site, and what our calculators can and cannot promise.
The process
- ✓Every figure is traced to a named source category: Food Standards Agency and NHS guidance for cooking temperatures, defrosting and food safety; published baking references and weight charts such as King Arthur Baking, BBC Good Food and Delia Online for ratios and conversions; and manufacturer data such as Dr Oetker, Renshaw and Wilton for gelatine setting, marzipan coverage and cake portion charts.
- ✓Every calculator is tested against hand-worked examples with expected answers derived independently of the code, run automatically across desktop and mobile browsers before each deployment.
- ✓The site has been through repeated adversarial audits in which each formula and figure was re-derived from its source from scratch and compared back to the calculator. Where the check disagreed with the code, we fixed the code.
- ✓Food safety figures, such as the 75°C core temperature for poultry, fridge-only brining, and the rule that food is never defrosted at room temperature, are checked against current FSA and NHS guidance rather than recipe folklore.
- ✓Errors reported through the feedback buttons on each page are re-checked against the source, fixed, and re-verified before the fix goes live.
- ✓Content is reviewed when sources update, and each calculator carries a last-updated date so you can see when it was checked.
Verified, not guaranteed
Our calculators give estimates, not guarantees. Ovens vary, ingredients vary by brand and how you measure them, and cup weights alone can differ by 10 to 20 percent, so treat results as a sound starting point and adjust to your kitchen. For food safety, always confirm meat is cooked with a food thermometer and follow current FSA guidance, and for allergies or special dietary needs speak to a registered dietitian or your GP rather than relying on any calculator.
Spotted an error?
Every calculator page has feedback buttons. If a figure looks wrong, tell us what you entered and what you expected: we investigate against the original source, fix anything that fails the check, and re-verify before the correction goes live. When a report shows a genuine error, the fix lands on the affected page itself, with a dated correction note where it matters.
